In my endless search for a unicorn (non-rusty truck in New England) I came across what looked like a promising specimen this morning. A 2006 Silverado 1500 with a plow, but only 55k miles. This couldn’t have been a daily driver, or not likely. Hopefully it lived in a garage? But it does have a plow. Anyway, it looks clean, but the ad is a bunch of garbage:

This guy seems to have a dealer license. Why, then, are all these pictures taken at different locations. It makes it LOOK like a private sale, but it isn’t. Is that because these are trade-ins that are too shitty for his normal inventory, or have some weird title issue, or... they’re maybe a famous NFL player’s party bus with the wrap job stripped off? Is this super shady? Or just normal used-car business?
Should I even bother contacting him about the truck, or should the other listings be enough evidence of general shadiness to run fast and far?

I bought my car from a licensed dealer who didn’t have his own lot. There are flippers and such who go through enough cars a year that they need a license, but not enough that they want a showroom.

...... but why are all the pictures in different locations, some in front of houses? It makes it look like he’s trying to portray them as private sales... maybe I’m reading too much into it.
If I wasn’t 90 minutes from there, I’d go look at that Chevy regardless. But I’ve got to do some diligence first.

He’s a junk flipper. They buy low, fix something as slapdash as possible, then sell high. He’s probably keeping them in his yard and selling wherever he can.
I had a neighbor that did that. He’d sell anything with a motor, usually after it sat on jack stands in his driveway for a week.

13 years and 55k. It was probably ONLY a plow truck, and the transmission is toast. But I’m sure it’s been massaged enough to make it through a 5 mile test drive ok.

Eh could be the deal your looking for. Just meet him somewhere with decent lighting and traffic. Its worth finding out. It’s not like he is taking your money or personal info.
And on the 5.3l , drive the piss out of it. And let it idle. Miss fires will pop up when idling if there is a problem.
Also why a 1500 for a plow truck? Never used anything less than a 2500 (3/4)

Yeeeah. That could be true. Most people don’t use 1/2 tons as dedicated plow trucks, which is why you can sometimes find them that were only used for someone’s driveway... but something doesn’t sit right, you might say it’s sitting... like a brick.

It’s hard to find the time, he’s 90 minutes away. There’s just nothing locally, because I live in the woods.
1/2 ton because plowing is only an occasional use, we’d use it for lots of other things and don’t need the harsh suspension of an HD truck.
My bet is it will be moot, because someone will buy it at that price before I’d even have time to go look at it.

55k is just the miles while in forward gears, imagine how many miles are in reverse as well. Plow miles are hard miles.

I mean, Ferris Bueller taught me that reverse miles still count as miles. But the point is still possibly valid, if this did a lot of plowing. It’s hard to tell, but the plow looks like it’s seen some action. Still, from the pics it looks better than most. For sure, it didn’t plow 100 driveways every winter since 2006.

My dad used to do snowplowing. Yeah the truck after 12 years would only have 80k, but they would be in the second or third transmission.

But on a serious note, my kids are going to think I went to school in the Stone Age because I clearly remember when we first started to see computers in the school, and it was maybe 5th grade for me? I didn’t have a cell phone until college? And even in college, I didn’t have one as a freshman. But I digress. I’ve got some clouds to yell at.

Yeah I can relate to most of that. My first cell phone had a bag attached to it. The first razr was out sometime during my college years, and who can forget AOL messenger? Hell, email was brand spanking new too in college.
